Istanbul's Grand Bazaar is one place most tourists want to visit when they travel to the largest city in Turkey.  Istanbul, formerly known as Byzantium and Constantinople, is the only major city in the world that lies in both Asia and Europe, and this colorful city reflects the influences of both continents. The covered bazaar, known as Kapa Car, has been the center of trade in Istanbul for many years.  The bazaar has been repaired a number of times because of earthquakes and fires; it was enlarged each time until after the earthquake in 1894.  After this great quake, the bazaar took the shape it has today. This shopping center, a forerunner to today's suburban malls, has withstood 12 strong earthquakes and 9 big fires.  Reconstruction after a major fire in 1954 resulted in the most comprehensive restoration.  This huge bazaar can be entered through one of its 18 gates; however, it is best approached by the Nuruosmaniye Gate, which faces Nuruosmaniye Mosque, one of more than 2,000 mosques in Istanbul today.  During the Ottoman Empire, the bazaar was not only a shopping and trade center but also a financial district. This combination served as a model for markets in other Eastern countries.  At that time, the streets of the bazaar were lined with stalls selling spices, cloth, or wood.  In addition, until the 1850s, it served as a slave market.  Currently containing more than 4,000 shops, the bazaar continues to be a virtual labyrinth with something for just about everyone: carpets, glassware, brass, ceramics, clothing, jewelry, and leather goods, just to name a few popular items.

Wandering some of the 80 streets and roads is an adventure a visitor will never forget.  In this arcade, an incredible array of goods offered by aggressive salesmen makes it difficult to walk through without buying something. The tradesmen are congenial and eager to show their wares to prospective buyers. These salesmen can easily spot tourists, especially Americans, who always seem to be ready to purchase something.  If a shopper stops strolling to look at some items in a shop window or on display, a salesman immediately offers his services.  Sometimes, sellers actually accost shoppers in the street, enticing them to enter their shop.  Often, merchants even serve tea as they demonstrate their goods and negotiate prices. Since haggling over prices is a time-honored tradition, Western travelers seeking bargains can expect to be approached by experienced salesmen who know how to sell.  The process of negotiation is a key ingredient in the sale.  Along with their purchases, visitors bring home vivid memories of bargaining for their treasures in Kapa Car.
